Cotton

Cotton fabrics are the most inexpensive material used in pads.

There are many different types of cotton fabrics used in cloth pads.

  • Fleece - commonly used as the absorbent core or top layer
  • flannel/flannelette - often used in the core and as a top layer
  • jersey - a "t-shirt" fabric, often used as a top layer
  • "Flat Cotton", or "Quilter's Cotton" - the type of cotton you would use for dressmaking or craft projects - can be used as a top layer or as backing on pads.

Cotton is not as absorbent as hemp or bamboo, but is easier to find in local fabric stores. As a crop it is more environmentally damaging, unless it is organic cotton.
